Biography

“For me, when I write music, it’s like I’m transported to another world” -Radu Sirbu

At 27 years old, Radu is a Romanian musician of unparalleled fame in Europe and the eastern hemisphere. He was born in Peresechina in the Orhei region of Moldova near of the capital, Chisinau, on December 14, 1978. The family soon moved, however, to the city of Balti. Growing up, Radu was and remains very close to his father, Alexei, a commercial airplane pilot, his mother, Eugenia, a kindergarten teacher and his 14-year-old brother, Alexei Jr.
Radu’s love for music began in childhood, the moment his father handed him a guitar for his tenth birthday. At that time, he felt that he would devote his life to music: “I knew that I would sing.” He entered a music school, where he studied the guitar and piano. However, because of his father’s job, the family was forced to move closer to Moldova’s capital; as a result, Radu could not finish his studies at the music school and attended instead a standard high school. After graduating, Radu worked as a DJ. At the same time, his parents opened a children’s performing arts institute called “Artshow”; it was there that Radu began to work more closely with music.
In 1998, Radu entered the department of vocal performance as well as the department of opera at the Music Conservatory of Moldova. His career took another step when he became a teacher at his parents’ “Artshow.” At this time, he began to compose original songs; then, at 19 years old, he founded a Russian rock band called “Zenith.” He remained in the group for two years, during which time the band was popular locally, but Radu dreamt of broader success.
In 2001, he auditioned to become a member of the dance-pop group, O-Zone. The group worked very hard, and after many long recording sessions and rehearsals, they made their debut in Romania: their song, “Dragostea Din Tei” (commonly known as the Maya-hi song) brought them instant fame. However, the extent of their coming fame across Europe was unimaginable. Spurred by the momentum of “Dragostea Din Tei,” O-Zone became an outstanding success: from Holland to Spain to Germany to France to Romania and Russia, O-Zone was number one in all music charts, such as Billboard. They performed in almost every major city of Western and Eastern Europe. Featured almost daily in every magazine and television show, O-Zone conquered the European world; never before had such huge success ever been seen. Even after O-Zone split up in 2005, “Dragostea Din Tei” suddenly became a smash hit in Japan.
In 2005, Radu announced his marriage of three years to the beautiful Ana Sirbu; until that time, Ana had been known to Radu’s fans as his girlfriend. At the same time, he announced that he and Ana were expecting a baby, and in July of 2005, their daughter, Anastatia Dalia, was born. At her birth, Radu recalls feeling “drunk with happiness.” Describing Anastatia Dalia, Radu exclaims, “She looks like both of us together- she took the best parts!”
Having made his mark in Europe and Japan, Radu is now advancing his solo career. In the summer of 2005, he finished producing the album of his close friend, Mahay; the album includes a song called "Dulce" featuring Radu. In May of 2006, Radu will release his solo album, entitled “Alone.” Although he wrote the music to the album’s songs himself, he wrote the lyrics together with Ana. Some of the songs are in Romanian, his native language, and some are in English, a language he has only recently learned; the album also includes a song in Russian, a language which he has spoken fluently since childhood. When writing music, Radu is inspired by anything “beautiful and positive,” a sentiment clearly expressed in his vivacious and optimistic songs. Music is for Radu part of his soul: “For me, when I write music, it’s like I’m transported to another world.” Today, in addition to singing, Radu plays the piano and drums, but his favorite instrument is his guitar, which features in many of the songs in “Alone.”
